"A Streetcar Named Desire"- The Poker Scene

The poker scene included Stanley, Steve, Mitch, Pablo, Stella, and Blanche. In the beginning of the poker scene, Mitch and Stanley are arguing. Mitch is eliminated from the game early and chases after Blanche. Meanwhile, Stanley is playing the poker game with the boys and is losing. While Stanley is losing, Blanche decides to turn on the radio, which makes Stanley angry. Then, Stanley turns the radio off by throwing the radio out of the window, loses his mind and charges after Stella. When Stanley approaches Stella, he gets attacked by an unknown person. In the play, “A Streetcar Named Desire”, the characters Stanley and Mitch exemplify gender inequality. Stanley discourages Stella and Blanche from watching the boys play poker. Blanche says, “Poker is so fascinating. Could I kibitz” (Blanche 1185)? Stanley says, “You could not. Why don’t you women go up and sit with Eunice” (Stanley 1185)? Mitch says, “Poker shouldn’t be played in a house with women” (Mitch 1190). Although Stanley and Mitch can’t get along, they agree that should not be around when poker is being played. Blanche desires Mitch’s affection. Blanche wants Stella to leave Stanley because of his outburst during poker night. Blanche is exemplifying loyalty to her family by expressing here care for Stella’s safety. Blanche says, “I’ve been half crazy, Stella! When I found out you’d been insane enough to come back in here after what happened- I started to rush in after you” (Blanche 1193). Blanche is expressing her care and loyalty for her sister’s safety.
